Maurice Sendak, noted author of one of the most popular childrens’ books of all time, “Where The Wild Things Are”, has died at 83 yrs. old. Sendak, according to The Associated Press, died early Tuesday at a hospital in Connecticut after suffering a stroke on Friday. The author wrote “Where The Wild Things” Are in 1963, won the Caldecott Medal for the book in 1964, and the book was adapted to film in 2009.
In 2009, when director Spike Jonez made the movie version of “Where The Wild Things Are,” Sendak said he urged the director to remember his view that childhood isn’t all sweetness and light. And he was happy with the result. Sendak once stated, “So I write books that seem more suitable for children, and that’s OK with me. They are a better audience and tougher critics. Kids tell you what they think, not what they think they should think.”
