Although no deal has yet been reached, US Airways has taken a first step towards a potential merger with long time rival American Airlines. According to US Airways spokesman Andrew Christie and documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission this morning, an agreement was reached between the three main unions at AA regarding the terms of future collective bargaining agreements’ in the event of a merger between the two.
US Airways Group CEO Douglas Parker sent a letter to the employees offering a favorable endorsement regarding the potential merger stating that the deal “represents a unique opportunity that we should not ignore”. Parker clearly noted that no deal has been reached in regards to a merger, and reiterated that the only agreements reached have only been between the three unions. According to Reuters, the union estimates a merger could save at least 6,200 jobs.
