WATCH_DOGS is one of game publisher/developer Ubisoft’s newest IPs, and ever since its reveal during E3 2012 there has been nothing but hype surrounding any and every piece of news relating to it. The amount of excitement fans have expressed for its release seems to have given Ubisoft and Sony the confidence needed to turn the, yet-to-be released property into a fully fledged cinematic feature. Recently, during Sony’s press conference at this year’s Gamescon, news broke that Ubisoft will work with Columbia Pictures and New Regency to not only bring WATCH_DOGS to the silver screen, but their Far Cry, Raving Rabbids, and Assassin’s Creed franchises as well.
Gamers, such as myself, have become wary of Hollywood’s attempts to transform popular works from the interactive medium into movies, but with the source materials’ premises being so unique and interesting, it seems hard for them to fail. I will admit that I’m at a loss for how they can make Raving Rabbids into a compelling film, but the other three shouldn’t need too much work. I mean, Assassin’s Creed is centered around a centuries covenant of assassins, WATCH_DOGS has a protagonist who can control any piece of technology in Chicago with his phone, and Far Cry already had a movie directed by Uwe Boll, so… it’s due for a redo/reboot. (hopefully based on 3’s story, or hell even Blood Dragon could work!)
So, basically, for casual movie-goers these films are an easy sell, but as for the gaming community, we will await (some eagerly, some not) to see if Hollywood can finally make adaptations that do not condescend to our tastes, and still pay homage to the beloved source material. Only time will tell.
