It’s been a while since a ‘Spike Jonze film’ has been headed to theaters, thank goodness that’s coming to an end as the trailer for his latest film ‘HER’ which is due November 20th in the US. The movie follows Theodore Twombly (played by Joaquin Phoenix), a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken from the break up of his longterm relationship, Twombly becomes intrigued by a new operating system which promises to be an entity in its own right, unique to each individual user. When he boots it up, he meets “Samantha” (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), a machine who is insightful, sensitive and funny. Over time, their needs and desires grow in tandem, resulting in a deep love for one another.
Mr. Jonze’s last feature was the phenomenal and James Gandolfini starrer ‘Where The Wild Things Are.’ Below is one of the resounding quotes that sums up how Spike feels about love in the technology age:
“Falling in love is a crazy thing to do, it’s kinda like a form of socially acceptable insanity.” – Spike Jonze
Spike Jonze: What did inspire this… There are so many different aspects to it. There are all these conceptual science fiction areas to the film. Obviously technology has become such a big presence in our lives and, I definitely know, in my life. I think of how much of my daily interaction is with and through technology… and it’s an emotional experience too. You know, you get a buzz when getting texts: “Oh, someone’s thinking about me.”
The movie has all these high-concept ideas, but it is nevertheless mostly a relationship movie. It’s about love and our need to connect and our [method] of connecting. But, at its heart, it is a relationship movie.
