Ed Falco, a novelist, short story collection writer, playwright and director of the MFA program in creative writing at Virginia Tech, has done the unthinkable, he has resurrected the Corleone Family. The novel, titled The Family Corleone, is based on unproduced portions of the screenplays of Godfather 3 and 4, both written by Mario Puzo, who died in 1999. The prequel follows two sequels to The Godfather, The Godfather Returns (2004) and The Godfather’s Revenge (2006) both written by Mark Winegardner, according to USA Today.
The Family Corleone, revolves around the Depression-era ’30’s in New York City. A city primarily comprised of Italian and Irish immigrants who battled for turf and power. During this time, Mob boss Vito Corleone is focused on his family and their future, in Falco’s prequel. His youngest kids, Michael, Fredo and Connie-are school-age and don’t have a clue what the family business is. Tom, the son Vito and his wife have adopted is in college, and 17 yr. old Sonny, all too well knows what his father does, and eagerly wants to be part of the “family business”.
Booklist, reviews thousands of new books, already has given The Family Corleone its approval, saying “it channels the original so well, that readers will be vividly reminded of Puzo’s strength,” leaving them “dreaming of just one more movie.”
