Macy’s Parade Confetti Confidential Documents

The New York Police Department have begun an investigation into claims that shredded paper used as confetti during last week’s Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day Parade contained private and personal data — including Social Security numbers and bank account information. The shredded documents fell upon tens of thousands of parade-gawkers lining to watch the parade near Central Park on New York’s Upper West Side, and on closer inspection revealed that the shredded strips were still easily readable and contained details about serving police officers, including their names, social security numbers and bank details as well as references to crimes that took place in the area. One document even included documents regarding Mitt Romney’s motorcade schedule during the Presidential debate at Hofstra University. The documents appear to have originally belonged to the Nassau County Police Department, which police parts of Long Island, just outside New York City. A Macy’s spokesman stated that they used: “commercially manufactured multicoloured confetti, not shredded paper.” It was suggested that the confetti may have been tossed from a window above the parade route.
