Even though Joel Ward’s series-winning overtime goal in Game 7 had Washington Capitals fans in D.C. cheering, nobody expected the onslaught of racist reactions that spewed forth through Twitter.
Ward, Canadian born to parents originally from Barbados, worked hard and rose through the ranks of the NHL, a sport not typically deluged with people of color. Last night, the color of his skin was all that some people could see after his OT puck flew past Boston Bruin’s Tim Thomas for the game winning goal. When the final score was tallied giving the Capitals the Game 7 win, out of the woodworks came the vented anger using the N-word via Twitter representing Boston while referencing Mr. Ward.
