Google completed its $12.5B purchase of device maker Motorola Mobility in a deal closed on Tuesday. Just nine months after Google Inc. announced that it wanted to expand into the hardware business with the most expensive and riskiest acquisitions in its 14-year history. The purchase pushes Google deeper into the cellphone business, a market it entered four years ago with the debut of its Android software, now the chief challenger to Apple Inc’s iPhones.
With the purchase of Motorola, Google acquires a company that has struggled in the last few years. Motorola’s last successful product introduced was the Razr cellphone in 2005. Motorola, now ranks eighth in the cellphone industry with 2% of the worldwide market share, once held the number 2 spot in the world.
