Faux Society’s DVD Pick of the Week pick is Red Tails, the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, an infamous group of African-American pilots during WWII, and their battles on AND off the battlefield. It’s an aviation movie, which means most of the movie takes place in the sky. Though it’s a befitting location for the film, what I enjoyed most about the action of the battle scenes, is the clarity and the understanding of where everyone is positioned during the battle scenes. So many times when I’ve watched war movies, the cuts between characters and their positions during battle scenes becomes confusing, and I’ll be like “WAIT,….I thought he was dead.” Not with Red Tails, there are full scale action scenes between 10 planes going on at once, and you’ll have a full understanding of placement during action. That is fully credited to the talented director (Anthony Hemingway) who out did himself, with this WWII epic scaled picture.
The film has an all star cast showcasing the established (Cuba Gooding Jr, Terrance Howard) , and the next up as far as strong black leads (Nate Parker, Tristan Wilds, David Oyelowo). Everyone turns out strong performances, even Terrance Howard does that thing he does, where he’s RIGHT on the verge of tears, and his voice starts to crack, but he doesn’t cry. It’s awesome. What I most enjoyed about the picture was the way they portrayed the pilots, being smart, eager and earnest young African-American men. Mere 18 year olds, laying their lives on the line to protect our freedom. That’s mostly who becomes a soldier, the youths. So, the next time you complain about the youth being “ungrateful” or “unhelpful”, think twice, because it doesn’t hold true to every youth.
The Blu Ray/DVD combo will include Double Victory, a companion documentary to the film that debuted on January 13, 2012 on H2, part of the History Channel. It details the full real life story of the Tuskegee Airmen, and includes interviews with many of the surviving members.
