Attention all Power Ranger/Super Sentai fans! Indie developer Behold Studios is currently working on their latest title, Chroma Squad – indie sentai studio-, and its premise is very “meta” to say the least. The game puts you in the role of a television studio that produces Power Rangers or “Super Sentai” (original Japanese series whose stock footage is used for the American franchise) styled programming. As the head of the studio you, the player, will have to manage everything from buying audio and film equipment to setting up marketing campaigns to promote your show, and reel in high ratings.
From its description most would believe Chroma Squad to have gameplay similar to titles such as: The Movies, Game Dev Tycoon, or any of the entries from the wildly popular Sim or Tycoon series. While the expected elements from those titles are present; what sets Chroma Squad apart from others in the simulation genre is its inclusion of a turn-based tactical combat system. Each recording session serves as the stage where you will battle and defeat enemies, and navigate your team through the show’s proposed storyline. Multiple endings have been confirmed, and I am personally excited to see where the game’s distinct story arcs take the player.
Chroma Squad will also have a highly competitive multiplayer mode, as well as cooperative multiplayer, that will force players to broadcast their acts head-to-head, and battle it out to gain the most viewers. Chroma Squad is a crowd funded game, and I am happy to report that it has already reached its goal, and physical copies of the game will be ready to ship come April 2014. If you’re too anxious to wait, and want to get your hands on it A.S.A.P. then swing by the Chroma Squad Kickstarter page and back it, by at least as much as $25, to receive early beta access available as soon as this October, but hurry, the pledge packages are running out fast. A game this steeped in nostalgia with its pixel graphics and “Saturday morning” feel is sure to be a hit, so don’t miss out.
