Best Coast is back, and this time they’re showing no signs of a sophomore slump with their evolved, more in-depth album The Only Place. Legendary music producer Jon Brion produced the album (Fiona Apple, Kanye West’s Classic Late Registration) which has a very cohesive sound and doesn’t have a misstep. Throughout this musical journey, the album travels far.

From the themes chosen for the album, it sounds like with Bethany Cosentino’s (lead singer), new found success (congrats!!! on the clothing line launch), the people around her are a’changing. With success comes money, and fame, and it seems she’s having issues adjusting to this new life style, maybe, dare I say, with hints of paranoia. She belts out on the opening of the tentatively titled Do You Love Me Like You Used To:

I wake up to the morning sun/When did my life stop being so fun/The way I used to when all this begun.

It’s a solid track fully harping on the fact that she won’t change, and she feels through her stubbornness that it’s for the best. Bethany spoke with SPIN magazine, and said this regarding people sending negative words her way:

You have to stop looking at it. At first I was like, “Oh, cool — somebody wrote about me on a blog!” And then there’d be all these comments attached to it, and you’re like, “Oh, wait — I didn’t know people said these kinds of things.” So you learn the hard way that some people love you and some people hate you. You have to move forward and try not to let that stuff get you down. But it definitely did get me down at a point.

Another stand out on the album is the short but hypnotic “Dreaming My Life Away” and “Up All Night” has the feeling of a melancholy anthem. Best Coast has released one of those rare albums that you feel the need to constantly get up and skip tracks. Best Coast’s The Only Place will be out May 15, 2012 at a local Urban Outfitters near you, also digitally distributed through iTunes & Amazon.
