Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey, showcases Master puppeteer Kevin Clash, who has loved the art form since the moment he saw his first puppet ‘come alive’ on the tv screen. The documentary shows to anyone who has ever wondered, (like I have), ‘who this loving person behind the sweetness of Elmo is, and how he became the “Sesame Street” icon that he is. Kevin shows how ‘the desire in your heart ( no matter what others say) to do something that you know is your life’s path, should always be nurtured.
Jim Henson was the ‘Grand Master’ of puppetry, and Kevin shares the road that led to his tutelage under Henson, at such an early age. The respect and friendship is prevalent in the “Sesame Street” brand, even after Henson’s death, almost 22 years ago, with Clash currently serving as “Sesame Street” Muppet Captain and co-executive producer. And also at “Sesame Workshop” (where all the Muppets are created and brought to life), he was promoted to ‘Senior Creative Advisor’ in May 2007.
Kevin has won Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Performer for his work as Elmo and Hoots the Owl on Sesame Street in 1990, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2007. He has appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and on Emeril Live and Grill It! with Chef Bobby Flay. And in 2009, he appeared on The Game as the on-camera puppeteer Mookie. Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey was premiered at The Sundance Film Festival and will be in select theatres in April. Check your local listings. It can be seen on Netflix.com or purchased on itunes.
Elmo, along with bass-playing Clifford and Hoots the Owl, are all the creations of Kevin Clash and this documentary shows the world that he truly realizes the impact he and his ‘friends’ continue to have on the world with this beautiful craft. The lessons of love he teaches, are truly the stuff that Kevin Clash is made of.
