On Thursday, the announcement of Dan Henderson’s (6-2 UFC) knee injury (MCL tear), set into motion one of the busiest news days in the history of MMA. When the announcement of Henderson’s knee injury was announced, UFC president Dana White immediately went scrambling for a replacement for light-heavyweight champ John “Bones” Jones (10-1 UFC) to fight at UFC 151 in the headliner of the top-heavy pay-per-view card. White came up with Chael Sonnen (6-5 UFC), sensing him a suitable replacement for Jones, but Jones told White he wouldn’t fight him (or Chris Weidman) on eight days’ notice. That angered White, “Me and (UFC executive) Lorenzo (Fertita) are disgusted,” he said. While Jones’ decision irked White, he made sure that the public understood that he had no way of contractually forcing “Bones” to fight.
These comments came moments after announcing the cancellation of UFC 151, which was scheduled to take place Sept. 1 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and air live on pay-per-view. After White made the UFC 151 cancellation announcement, White then announced that Jones would now fight Lyoto Machida (10-3 UFC) for the light heavyweight title (their last bout was in December ’11 in Toronto, and Jones won by guillotine) as the main event at next month’s show in Toronto at UFC 152. Well, surprise, surprise! Wouldn’t you know that Machida turned down the fight, and its no wonder, since Machida’s last fight was on Aug. 4, and you can see why he wouldn’t want to take on a championship fight on less than one month’s notice. So, as of this morning, Vitor Belfort has been slated to fight Jones at UFC 152, and by moving up to light heavyweight, will attempt to attain the title. Whew!! This UFC drama is more than daily soap operas cover in one season, and just think, this has all taken place within the last 24 hrs.!!!
