Fast-Food Workers in NYC Strike

Fast food workers across NYC went on strike at 11:30 a.m., at the start of the lunch rush hour, and began protesting at a Burger King near New York City’s Penn Station marking the beginning of a rare strike against the nearly union-free industry. Employees from Burger King, Dominos, Taco Bell, Wendy’s and Papa John’s, are all participating, along with McDonald’s, who had the largest number of activists. This appears to be the first hard attempt at unionizing workers in the industry who typically deal with low wages, limited hours, and high turnovers. Organizer cite changing demographics of the fast-food industry as one reason strikes are necessary: “It’s not just your teenagers with after school jobs. It’s mothers, fathers and families,” said Jonathon Westin, organizing director at New York Communities for Change, who helped organize Thursday’s protests.
