Tunneling to the U.S.

Two tunnels have been discovered near the border, presumably used to smuggle drugs from Mexico to the United States. U.S. agents noted that these were not commercial mining tunnels. Each tunnel had lighting and ventilation systems and extended more than 650 feet. The first tunnel, was discovered by the Mexican army, and it began below a bathroom sink in a Tijuana warehouse. The second tunnel began in a storeroom in a Mexican ice plant. This tunnel was lined with plywood and was nearly 55 feet below the border, ending in a storage room in Arizona. Even though over 150 tunnels have been discovered since the early 1990’s, none were this well structured and designed. The tunnels showed very little wear and tear on the floors suggesting that these tunnels were newly constructed.
