DVD PICK OF THE WEEK. “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows begins with a short time lapse from the first Sherlock Holmes, with the deductible sleuth (Downey  Jr.) being pulled even deeper into his mentally histrionic world of murder, corruption and blackmail while the equally brilliant Moriarty (Jared Harris) brings his own brand of psychosis to the screen. All the while, Dr. Watson (Jude Law), Holmes’ forever friend, is preparing for his nuptials to his fiance’ Mary (Kelly Reilly) and can finally see a world away from all of Holmes’ craziness and the duo-crime-solving. When Holmes realizes he has solved a few of the clues about Moriarty’s evil plot, Moriarty realizes he should have put an end to Sherlock drawing breath a long time ago, and decides, as most evil characters do, to attack the people closest to Sherlock.

Downey’s charm, and the never-ending banter between Holmes and Watson, the sequences illustrating Holmes’ analytical powers at work, action sequences, and the 19th century landscape and settings, making you actually feel as if you can see, feel and smell a working London, and it all makes for an enjoyable return to the series. With the evil addition of Moriarty, Harris brings a classy and elite view to the truly mad and psychotic portrayal of arch villain. The interaction between the three, makes for a truly enjoyable time.
