Ridley Scott at 74, shows no signs of slowing down, as he returns to the franchise he launched 33 years ago with his near-genius “Alien” series. It’s the year 2093, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and her boyfriend scientist Chris Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green), according to them, make the most significant scientific discovery in human history, in a lowly cave on the Isle of Skye (Scotland). Buried in caves from all over the world, are maps leading to a location deep in space. Dr. Shaw becomes absolutely sure that the drawings on the caves walls, must surely an invitation to come join them. But, who made them? Who were they? And why should we go? To find out, they board the ship titled Prometheus, in a journey to literally find the meaning of life.
The first half of the movie is fantastic, as Shaw and Holloway lead the crew to explore unknown artifacts in an unknown world. Every step they take reels the audience in as your mind tries to figure out what is safe and what is not. And just like the Alien series, every team comes with its own android, and David (Michael Fassbender), is superb, with just the right amount of brilliance and creepy as you watch him imitate a very young Peter O’Toole in Lawrence of Arabia. Towards the end of the movie, questions that have been asked or wondered about are answered, and you will leave the theater loving the symbiosis of the cast, including Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, and Guy Pearce. The movie is shot in 3-D, and the film, in its totality, is aesthetically beautiful, even with a great many shots being in dark, cavernous spaces. This franchise, hopefully will return to the screen very soon, and like today’s Prometheus, we hope Ridley gets it right once again.
