If you went to high school chances are you’ve heard of or read, J.D. Salinger’s classic novel ‘Catcher In The Rye.’ It was the best-selling novel that set up for the highly anticipated follow up that was never published. Well a new documentary sets us up to bring us never before told stories about Salinger, screenwriter Shane Salerno (“Savages,” “Shaft”) has spent close to a decade on a singular obsession: the reclusive late author J.D. Salinger. Now his work is finally coming to fruition:
“The myth that people have read about and believed for 60 years about J.D. Salinger is one of someone too pure to publish, too sensitive to be touched. We replace the myth of Salinger with an extraordinarily complex, deeply contradictory human being,” Salerno said in a statement. “Our book offers a complete revaluation and reinterpretation of the work and the life.”
SALINGER features interviews with 150 subjects including Salinger’s friends and colleagues who have never spoken on the record before as well as film footage, photographs and other material that has never been seen. The film is the first work to get beyond the Catcher in the Rye author’s meticulously built up wall: his childhood, painstaking work methods, marriages, private world and the secrets he left behind after his death in 2010. Catch a glimpse of the trailer below, film releases September 6th in theaters.
