So the internet went bat-sh*t crazy last night with the official leak of GolfWang’s head honcho Tyler, The Creator‘s second album “WOLF” official leakage. What did we take away after our first listen? The fact that Tyler’s WOLF has proven that Tyler & the Wolfgang movement isn’t a ‘flash in the pan’ movement, they’re legitimate artists with a point of view and an ability to paint vivid pictures with his music. The album opens with an instrumental piece that triumphantly hits a crescendo where Tyler sing-songily says:
“Fuck YOU!….f**k YOU!”
It definitely sets the tone, and brings you into this niche world where skateboards, cats, Vans apparel, and Supreme fitteds, reign well, SUPREME! The album sonically sounds, like an album; a body of work that tells one story. NOT a mixtape, and NOT a bunch of mixed & mastered songs put together. Tyler worked hard to tell his story of a young black male who’s juggling fame, fickled fans, been raised by his single mother and the fact that his father STILL has yet to reach out to him since attaining success. His verse on ‘Rusty‘ featuring a gnarly verse from Domo Genesis (Why is he so underrated?..That’s another discussion.)
Look at that article that says my subject matter is wrong
Saying I hate gays even though Frank is on 10 of my songs
Look at that Mom who thinks I’m evil, hold that grudge against me
Though I’m the reason that her motherfucking son got to eat
Look at the kid who had the 9 and tried to blow out his mind
But talk is money, I said, “Hi,” I guess I bought him some time
That is the epitome of the album, Tyler is at a crossroads in his career, a constant struggle to stay relevant in this ever changing society where we consume and discard artists as fast as yesterday’s dinner. This is a meaty album filled with the angst ventings of Tyler and his ‘OF’ brigade.
Tyler’s knack for storytelling has truly developed songs such as ‘Colossus’ that regails the story of a simple day at Six Flags that turns into the creepiest fan meeting maybe in the history of EVER!
The fan gushes to Tyler on the song:
Tyler, I love you, I want to be just like you (alright)
I think about your face and I don’t even fucking try to (no homo)
Wish I had a basement mitt for me to hide you
We could play X-Box and listen to ‘In Search Of…’ and eat donuts
To truly understand & appreciate the album, it plays like a book with each song or (chapter) building upon the one before the end of ‘LONE.’ It’s maybe my favorite track on the LP, it’s a sombering bow of the proverbial present that Tyler has given the world.
God I wanna quit, but I can’t, cause mother and sister can’t pay the rent
4 stories with storage, I’m 21 with a mortgage
And tourings’ paying the bills, life is paying for thrills
