This past weekend, the film “The Hunger Games”, based on the best selling novel by Suzzane Collins, debuted with $155 million dollars for the opening three day weekend. That is a huge haul for the first installment in a long-awaited trilogy. With the translation of any book to the big screen, it’s pretty much a given that pleasing ‘all’ the fans will never work. You’ll often hear the low mumblings from the exiting patrons saying things like “How could they leave that part out?” or “That didn’t happen in the book.” This time the complaints re: “Hunger Games” weren’t about film changes, they leaned towards the casting of certain characters in the film.
For some of the “Hunger Game” fans, discontent with certain actors’ skin color seemed to be the problem.
It seems a little silly, in a day and age like this, that a book that takes place in a bleek future and one that pits children against children for sport, would concentrate so much on the pigmentation of an actors’ skintone. That someone could fix their lips to say “WHAT? The guy is Black? He wasn’t Black in the book, and him being Black makes me hate this movie!” Wow, who knew the casting of Lenny Kravtiz and Amandla Stenberg by the filmmakers to play pivotal roles would be called into question. People tweeted their opinions about the casting of the actors, with reasons waffling between a dislike of the change as a fan of the book, and others hating Black actors in the role, because, well they’re Black. The sentiments that were expressed made a true fan launch a website to collect some of the ignorant tweets from fans.
