After street protests began fifteen months ago, Egyptians were able to exercise their democratic rights and vote in this country’s first-ever presidential election. Reports stated that people came in throngs, some say millions, as they waited in long lines to vote for one of five leading candidates for the office which was once held by the tyrant Hosni Mubarek, who was dethroned following the infamous Arab Spring revolt.
Al Masry Al Youm, the country’s largest privately owned newspapers’ headlines read, “Rise up, Egyptians!” on Wednesday morning. Voting will continue on Thursday, as well. There isn’t a front-runner, and there is said to be no reliable polls, so a run-off is impossible to predict. Even though there were long lines, there was little trouble reported.
