Shame on You American Airlines!!!

The Vanderhorst family was trying to fly from New Jersey to Los Angeles, when they were kicked off an American Airlines flight because they believe the airline was prejudiced against their 16-year old son who has Down syndrome. The Vanderhorst’s state that their son Bede was singled out for his disability. The family has flown together before, with no problems with airlines, but this time they upgraded to first class, which mom Joan believes was the issue. Joan recorder a video of the incident, because she believed Bede’s civil rights were being violated. In the video, Bede can be seen quietly playing with his hat, while dad Robert asserts, “He’s behaving. He’s demonstrating that he’s not a problem.” American Airlines spokesperson told KTLA- For the safety of the young man and the safety of others, American Airlines offered to book another flight for the family. The airline alleges that Bede was “excitable, running around, and not acclimated to the environment.” The family was told that their son’s behavior could be a problem so close to the cockpit, and the pilot may become distracted, which could force an emergency landing, but the Vanderhorst’s don’t believe that excuse. They are now planning to sue the airline, and as Robert puts it, “Respect each person’s dignity. Everyone of us should be treated with equal dignity.”
